Distribution of Grain Boundaries in Aluminum as a Function of Five Macroscopic Parameters
نویسندگان
چکیده
The grain boundary character distribution in commercially pure Al has been measured as a function of lattice misorientation and boundary plane orientation. The results demonstrate a tendency to terminate grain boundaries on low index planes with relatively low surface energies and large interplanar spacings. The most frequently observed grain boundary plane orientation is (111). However, there are also instances where boundaries terminated by higher index planes have significant populations. For example, certain twist configurations on {11w} planes, which correspond to symmetric [110] tilt boundaries, also have relatively high populations. The population of symmetric [110] tilt boundaries exhibits an inverse relationship with previously measured energies.

The relative free energies of grain boundaries in magnesia as a function of five macroscopic parameters
Using measurements of the geometric and crystallographic characteristics of approximately 10 triple junctions in a MgO polycrystal, the relative grain boundary energy has been determined as a function of five macroscopic parameters. The relative energy of a particular grain boundary is inversely correlated with its frequency of occurrence. At all misorientations, grain boundaries with {1 0 0} i...
متن کاملDistribution of grain boundaries in magnesia as a function of five macroscopic parameters
A semi-automated method has been used to measure all five macroscopically observable parameters of 4.1 × 106 boundary plane segments making up 5.4 mm2 of boundary area in a hot-pressed magnesia polycrystal. The observations allow a complete description of the distribution of crystal orientations, grain boundary misorientations, and the crystallographic orientations of grain boundary planes. Amo...
متن کاملDistribution of Grain Boundaries in SrTiO3 as a Function of Five Macroscopic Parameters
Measurements of the grain boundary population as a function of misorientation and boundary plane orientation show that the distribution is inversely correlated to the sum of the energies of the surfaces comprising each boundary. The observed correlation suggests that the difference between the energy of a high-angle grain boundary and the two component surfaces is relatively constant as a funct...
متن کاملAn Overview of Accomplishments and Challenges in Recrystallization and Grain Growth
The study of microstructural evolution in polycrystalline materials has been active for many decades so it is interesting to illustrate the progress that has been made and to point out some remaining challenges. Grain boundaries are important because their long-range motion controls evolution in many cases. We have some understanding of the essential features of grain boundary properties over t...
متن کاملThe five-parameter grain boundary character and energy distributions of a fully austenitic high-manganese steel using three dimensional data
The three-dimensional interfacial grain boundary network in a fully austenitic high-manganese steel was studied as a function of all five macroscopic crystallographic parameters (i.e. lattice misorientation and grain boundary plane normal) using electron backscattering diffraction mapping in conjunction with focused ion beam serial sectioning. The relative grain boundary area and energy distrib...
